[There's a rustling noise on the voicemail, with a question of "Like this?" followed by the following for the voicemail.]

Hi, this is uh, Bucky. Leave a message if you need me I guess?

[And further rustling, followed by "Why do I need to do-?" before it cuts off.]

[Bucky seemed to be thinking that over a moment, looking just as confused as ever. He shook his head finally, apparently taking a different track.]

I'm good at fighting. And spying. And stealing vehicles. And killing things. I'm strong and fast and I heal quickly from things that I shouldn't. Those are the things I am good at, so...should I stick to those?

[... There is a long pause from him at all of that information just kind of being dumped on him.]

Do you want to stick with those? If not then, well. Time to explore your uh. Non-violent options.

[Bucky looked as though he didn't understand the question for a moment. He glanced to one side, and he put his hands together, starting to fiddle at the palm of the metal hand with his flesh fingers, as though simply feeling it for the sensation of it.]

I have never liked to do it. But I am good at it. I was supposed to be making the world better that way.

There are other ways to make the world a better place though?

[And Donnie should know, he fought in his own way to keep things good in an apocalypse.]

You can make things, either creatively or scientifically.

[Bucky made a face, still fidgeting at his fingers.]

I do not believe I am smart enough to do that. I'm not like you or...or others I've met who know things and...can do things. I have only ever followed orders.

[... Slow blink.]

Do you think everyone just started out good at stuff? Learning and figuring out what you want to do, and getting good at it, is part of the process.

[Bucky shook his head quickly, keeping his eyes down.] Not allowed. Failure isn't acceptable, anything but perfection is failure. If I don't get it right on the first try then it...I'm...

[A slight shake to his voice at that, before taking in a breath.] It can't...be any other way.

Well, that's not how things work around here.

[He sounds a little mad, but not at Bucky. At the situation that made Bucky think like that. ~~Hilarious when one considers how Donnie thinks about himself.~~]

And mistakes just mean you can do better next time.

[He looked back at Donnie, assessing, looking unsure, maybe even skeptical, as he was considering the answer.]

You truly believe that.

[A statement of fact, not a question. And he seemed as surprised by it as he had by anything else.]

I mean, yeah? If I didn't I'd have to disown my family.

[He could go on and on and on about his brothers' mistakes.]

[He took in a long breath.] That's not what I was...ever taught. But it sounds...more correct. Like how things...should be.

[Another thought before he looked over.] You do...science things, correct?

It's how things are, Bucky.

[He could go on, but he's being asked about science!] I do, I dabble in a lot of sciences.

Which ones do you like best?

[At least Bucky seems to realized that there's different kinds.]

I...I think I remember something about...cars? And...armor. Things like that.

Personally? Anything with technology.

[As to the rest, he chuckles.]

Well, that's interesting. Do cars interest you at all then?

I know how to hotwire and operate any vehicle including military grade aircraft and most forms of public transit? Is that...like an interest? It was always more of a...requirement to think than most other things I was made to do.

[... He can't help it, he starts to laugh at that. Because well, it is something.]

I mean, hotwiring is illegal. But knowing how all those others work is good, but I wouldn't call it an interest unless like... You want to know how they work and repair or build them with that knowledge?

[Bucky actually seemed to ponder over that one, shifting his gaze to the side, but not in the way he usually did so to avoid eye contact. More that he honestly was just thinking.]

I...do like to know how things work. To...see things that are new, that I didn't know existed yet.

Then there we go. I can help you with learning some of that, or you could try one of the schools they have here to learn.

[Yes, he remembers that Leo said he should suggest the schools to Bucky.]

Schools? I...am I not far too old to attend a school?

[He didn't sound offended exactly, more as though the very idea bewildered him to the core.]

Even if I did, what...good would that do? Is that...useful?

[He doesn't know, he never attended school!]

It's an avenue for learning, and hey some people learn better in the structured setting of school. If you don't that's fine too, but it can't hurt to find out.

[Bucky's eyes went to the side, but it seemed more like he was thinking this time, eyes darting a bit back and forth as he apparently seemed to be figuring through the data.]

...it might be...interesting. To be able to just...learn, without it needing to become...anything.

[As he says this he claps his hands together to make his point.]

There's a school of technology and a school of... Ugh, magic that I know of, but I think you need to already know magic for that one?

[He's pretty sure he heard that somewhere, possibly from Casey?]

[Bucky's nose wrinkle at the mention of "magic" probably did Donnie's heart some good.]

...a school of technology sounds more interesting. Considering that there is...that I am part technology as well. I would like to learn more about that as well, to understand more of what I am now. Where would that be?

Yes, I would like to go, some time, I believe. So long as it's...not too much trouble to reach there.
